Living in Kodiak is truly amazing, a real beautiful place. There are few places in the world one can live, where nature is so abundant, the air is so clean. Between the tall Spruce Trees and schools of Salmon racing through the crisp, clear streams; there are many plants and animals which can be found here in Kodiak. Of these few are is one of the most popular animals associated with Kodiak, the Kodiak Brown Bear.

With this type of nature so abundant, there comes a responsibility for all of us, both living in and visiting Kodiak. The responsibility to protect ourselves, our families, our friends, and even these magnificent creatures. The greatest protection we have is our knowledge of these animals.

Although coming in contact with one of these Brown Bears in rare, some people do encounter them out in the wild. If you do happen to run into one of them, there are a few things you can do to keep safe. Most of the time, a bear will not attack you unless they feel threatened. The biggest thing you can do is stay calm and don't run away, slowly walk away from the bear keep on doing what you were doing before you encountered the bear. Most bear encounters do not involve the bear charging.

There are only a handful of cases where bear encounters involved the animal charging. If you are in a situation where a bear is charging you, there are some things you can do that may keep you safe, and lessen your chances of injury. If you find yourself being charged by a bear, DO NOT RUN AWAY, running away will only encourage the bear to keep chasing after you. Bears can run in excess of 30 MPH, so running is useless. In this situation you want to make yourself look "big" by removing a coat or shirt and spreading it open above your head. Making lots of noise will also deter the bear. Most cases of bear charges don't result in attacks. Odds are the bear will charge you and run a different direction before actually reaching you

Remember, bear encounters are rare, cases of bear attacks are few and far between. They are really amazing and beautiful animals. Having respect for these bears and taking a few small precautions can really lessen your chances of undesirable encounters with them.

  • Do not camp on, or around known bear trails.
  • Dispose of garbage and other waste in their proper bear proof receptacles.
  • Never explore nature or the outdoors alone.
  • Never provoke or disturb any bear, especially a Sow with her cubs.
If you live in, or are visiting Kodiak, it is always a good idea to have knowledge about the wildlife, and safety precautions to take. You can contact the local Department of Fish and Wildlife, or the Alaska State Troopers for more information on Bear Awareness and outdoor safety. If you feel any of the information is inaccurate or incorrect, please feel free to use the contact page and let me know. Be safe, and enjoy what Kodiak has to offer.
